“Life is all about how you handle Plan B“
It’s a time old expression but said in a new way “Life is all about how you handle Plan B.” We do not know our true character or strength until we are challenged to step outside ourselves and discover what we truly are made of. I used to think I was one of those people whose life was laid out for me. I was so focused and driven that I refused to think that I would not succeed at the thing I wanted most in then world as a child – to be a dancer and actress. There was no Plan B because it was truly unacceptable to think that I was not going to achieve Plan A. To even start to think that way would divert my energies and I couldn’t let that happen.
But the true test, the true challenge of everything I believed about myself came when I realized that Plan A was not going to happen. I did not give up but realized that for a variety of reasons, I needed to think of a Plan B. Was I happy about it? Heck no! But I ran full on into discovering things about myself that I refused to see before. This lead to my career in business and later as an attorney. Careers that I loved and people that I loved along the way. These were choices not new to me but I had refused to explore the possibilities because I had my Plan A and nothing was going to get in the way.
In life there is no guarantee that our plans for ourselves with go without a hitch and that’s ok! We can learn from our failures. We can learn from our setbacks. Not everyone on the team needs to get a trophy. Rather than seeing failures and setbacks as failures, we should see them as our opportunities to find and go for our Plan B. As Suzy Toronto says “The choice is mine. After all . . . life is all about how you handle Plan B.”
